Fody Foods is an innovative company that produce a range of delicious, gut friendly foods. Fody’s range is certified as Low FODMAP, therefore can be enjoyed by people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) without the worry of tummy troubles.
Founded in 2016, by Stephen J. Singer, Fody Foods was the first Low FODMAP food brand in North America! Fody’s goal is ‘to make your body smile, inside and out’ and at Lavida we couldn’t agree with this philosophy more!
What is the Low FODMAP Diet?
FODMAP is an acronym that stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. These short-chain carbohydrates are found in everyday foods, including:
- Oligosaccharides: wheat, rye, lentils, chickpeas, baked beans, onion, garlic
- Disaccharides: cow’s milk, sheep’s milk, goat’s milk, yogurt, ice cream, soft cheese
- Monosaccharides: honey, apples, mangos, cherries, pears, watermelon
- Polyols: mushrooms, cauliflower, some artificial sweeteners (sorbitol, mannitol)
These short-chain carbohydrates are poorly absorbed and pass into the gut where they are rapidly fermented by our gut bacteria. This can cause symptoms of bloating, tummy pain and diarrhoea in people with IBS. The diet was developed by leading nutritional researchers at Monash University and has been validated in UK clinical trials by King’s College London.
A Low FODMAP diet provides symptom relief for up to 75% of people with IBS. It is recommended by the British Dietetic Association and used within the NHS for the management of IBS and other gastroenterological conditions. You should follow the diet with the support of a Registered Dietitian.
